Tuolumne Area Fuels Reduction Project

The Tuolumne Area Fuels Reduction proposal is a 251 acre project to treat the hazardous fuels located on the eastern side of the community of Tuolumne in Tuolumne County. The project will maintain and expand fuel breaks that protect the residents in Tuolumne as well as treat hazardous vegetation along the Eureka Ditch, water infrastructure that serves the community and surrounding rural area. The project, proposed by the Tuolumne Fire Safe Council (TFSC), is strategically located to maximize the benefits of existing fuels reduction in the Tuolumne area.
The proposed project consists of three treatment areas that are connected by treatment along the Eureka Ditch which runs through the larger project area and approximately 57 acres clearing 100’ around the ditch. The northern unit (Unit A) of the project expands the Mira Monte Fuel Break and treats 22 acres and will improve the ingress/egress along Buchanan Mine Road. The middle unit (Unit B) treats an area east of town and the elementary school of 56 acres it complements the Mt. Havalia Fuel Break and the Mt. Havalia VMP which CAL FIRE does prescribed burning on annually. The southern unit (Unit C) treats 116 acres along the Rim Contingency Line, reducing the fuel loading from ridge top all the way down to the grass fuel type to the west will greatly improve this strategic fuel break. The treatment methods, across the project area, will be mastication and handwork in locations where mastication is not feasible.
PROJECT PERFORMANCE PERIOD is 2026 through February 15, 2029.
Total State Grant not to exceed $911,120.00
Funding for this project provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s (CAL FIRE) Wildfire Prevention Grants Program as part of the California Climate Investments Program.
